Stormy Skies and Summer Bums: Seamwork Weston Shorts
Everybody needs a solid pair of summer shorts. Even fat girls, despite some contrary beliefs. I'm a big fan of wearing two pairs of crappy jeans all winter, wearing them out in the thighs, and then cutting them off into comfy frayed shorts just in time for summer. This is effective but not exactly stylish. So I decided to commit to sewing a pair of real shorts!
The pattern is relatively straight forward, including a lapped zipper. I've never sewn one before, despite sewing simple pants. I had to watch a few vids on youtube to get it straight but it was much simpler than I had anticipated. I did notice that it doesn't have one of those flappy businesses (technical term) to keep your kangaroo pouch from getting caught in the zipper, but from what i've gathered from my gingers they're pretty simple to draft yourself.
These shorts helped me build my pants confidence. If you've been watching my instagram, you know i've been slowly chipping away at my Ginger Jeans, and I kind of think this pattern is the poor man's Tap Shorts by Katy and Laney Patterns, which I've had my eye on for a bit.
I discussed this in my review of Leonora, but I find that I measure to about a size 18 or 20 when I look at the size chart, but cutting a size 14 or 16 ends up fitting much more effectively. I cut an 18 in these and had to do crazy downsizing and pleat action. But overall, the shorts are great and it's a lesson learned. This denim is a heart print from my local Joanns, which I've had my eye on for many moons but finally used for this. To be honest, it's thin and lackluster.
Let me know your fave shorts pattern in the comments and I'll check it out! I hope to have my Gingers up on the blog next week, stay tuned.
