Sonnenberg Picnics: Butterick B6318
I planned a picnic for Sam and I at Sonnenberg Gardens in Canandaigua on sunday and I decided it was the perfect time to sport my newest make: B6318. I've been admittedly avoiding those "big 4" patterns as an attempt to support indie makers and movers and shakers, but when I saw this dress start to pop up on instagram I knew it was a must-make.
I't been a little while since I've done a fitted bodice gathered skirt dress, which used to be my bread and butter when I first started sewing. I was determined if I was going to make a pretty party dress, which I was determined not to make a lot of this year, it was going to fit and be fucking nice as shit. So instead of facings (which you'll know if you've been here at all that facings are the bane of my entire existence) I lined the bodice fully and did a full bust adjustment.
The FBA was pretty successful in my opinion, especially trying it with just one bodice dart. The design of the dress itself leaves the top with a more oversized look, so i'm chopping the look of the bodice and the linen up to the way that looks. I'm into it though! I would probably do a more fitted adjustment on my next one, but the waist ties look lovely and i'm really happy with the dress. I also expected the sleeves to be a little shorter and more "capped" then they ended up here, so I think I would do that on my next version also.
The dress overall was a surprisingly easy make, pumped out in a 24 hour period whilst working on many different projects. The fabric is a linen cotton blend which I was very happy with and am definitely hoping to work with again. I also definitely spilled coffee on it before taking these pictures. You can't take me anywhere.
If your interested in seeing some more pics of Sonnenberg and my handsome partner, I've included them below.
As ya'll know, I'm starting to move my studio (and myself) in the beginning of august. I'm gonna need you guys to bear with me through this transition, as I suspect blog posts will probably not be weekly. The best way to keep up with me is through instagram @lookwhatmarymade.
