#EyesOnThePies 2019 Challenge: Pie #1
Hello and welcome to EYES ON THE PIES.
Aka what I’m calling my quest to learn to make pies this year. I’ll be making 12 pies (minimum) this year, one a month, in order to finally cement my quest to be a person who is good at making pies.
My first pie was the Blushing Apple Pie from the Four & Twenty Blackbirds pie book. I was very nervous to start with an apple pie because my grandmother makes critically acclaimed apple pies and I know I’ll probably never stand up to them. This pie, however, has the apples dunked in orange juice and chopped beats, along with flavors of ginger and cardamom, so I figured it was different enough from my Grandma’s classic.
I prepped for this pie by watching, um, maybe a million videos about crust making. I had the baker that works inside the florist shop to make one while I watched. I’ve read maybe every pinterest link known to man. I just assumed that I was so clumsy in the kitchen that it would never sink in, but I’m pretty impressed with the flakiness and taste. Not as good as my grandma’s crust, but I’ll probably have to tie her up and bribe her in order for her to show me how to make it.
I would like to mention that yes, I’m aware that these pictures are terrible. I shot them in the dark in my apartment before I ran this pie over to Sam’s family to devour. They all told me it was lovely but I’m not sure I believe everyone yet. I really enjoyed my slice but I feel like I set the bar too high for my first pie and now there’s nowhere to go but down.
I’d rate my first pie 4.5 out of 5 stars because, well, there’s gotta be room to grow.
