Gathered York Pinafore for Spring
I’ve been meaning to make a gathered York Pinafore by Helen’s Closet ever since Helen released the hack on her blog ages ago. I actually was more interested in sewing the gathered waist York than the regular one, despite making the un-hacked pattern first. I have been really practical with my fabric buying in 2019 and I invested in some charcoal essex linen blend fabric from cottoneer to finally churn out the gathered waist York of my dreams.
The making of the York is always a pleasure. It’s a wonderfully drafted pattern with great lines and a quick enough sew to make you feel really productive. I did edit the construction of the pinafore from Helen’s instructions and I’ll detail my edits here.
I understand the appeal of the really high and really low neckline options of the York, but I decided the most wearable look for me was to draft a neckline more in the middle of the two options. I also lowered the skirt rise an extra inch to account for boob real estate. The biggest edit I made was that I lined the “bodice” part of the pinafore in order to conceal the gathered hem inside it. I did not use bias tape on the neckline but I sealed up the armholes with bias tape anyways because I think it looks pretty.
That’s all for this York! I was soooo excited to get out without tights on to shoot these pics in highland park with Sam and the pup. He was so excited to walk and sniff everything and he slept very good that night. I’m excited to shoot more outside now that the weather is letting up here in Rochester!
